(Page 1 of 1)2. I currently live in Costa Rica and have a slingbox setup in my brothers house in Houston Texas. It works quite well although the quality of the picture isn't always the best but it should work for you.
Good Luck

3. I would also recommend calling up and changing the service address to an address in NYC. I did the same thing when I was living in a remote section of the country and wanted the local service and channels back in Tampa Bay, Fl.
Just be sure to keep your billing address as your current address, otherwise you will never see a bill.

4. Just stop watching TV, mkay? :)

5. When doing the change of service address, remember to leave the telephone line un-plugged and don't order any pay-per-view events that require the phone line.
Another problem you MAY encounter is that ever since the courts ruled against DirecTV and Dish Networks for letting applications like yours slip through, most of the local television stations on satellite were moved to SPOT BEAMS on the satellites - thus, making it physically impossible to receive those channels. (DirectTV places New York Channels on their New York Spot Beam - you would receive KRON-TV - http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/directvusa101.html On Dish Network, the primary New York stations are on the main feed - http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish119.html )
Technically, what you are doing is illegal as broadcasters have market exclusivity for their programming. That includes the reception of out-of-market signals, which is what you are proposing. However, it is done almost everywhere as people set up vacation homes, RV's as well as "friends and family" under a master account.
6. I think the the DirecTV DNS you need a registration for a car if you are going the RV route. Get that, and I think you are golden.

7. I guess I meant to say a registration for your RV

8. Heya. Do what my mom does.
Order a Direct TV box, but set up a PO box in NYC. That way all the local stations will be fed to you from NYC instead of the LAX office (she does this to get the Dallas stations instead of the podunk stations in deep East Texas).

11. Obviously if you read my post above, this is for DirectTV customers only.

12. I don't know about Dish, but DirecTv will allow you to view another areas local channels, but as a previous poster stated, you have to be persistent and there is a nominal fee. I had a neighbor here in Georgia that was originally from Green Bay and he was able to get the GB feeds in addition to Atlanta's local channels. All legally. Good Luck.

13. Los Angeles area customers (NOT including San Diego) can sign up for the "NBC in NY only in LA" promotion and get the New York NBC station broadcast live on the west coast. I've been watching (or tivo'ing) my favorite NBC shows 3 hours earlier for months now. It's not ALL networks, but it's better than none, AND IT'S LEGAL. Directv will do this because the same company owns both the L.A. and N.Y. stations, and they have signed a "blanket waiver" allowing Los Angeles customers to receive the New York broadcast. I called in and signed up my folks for it just last week, so I know that it's still available. YOU HAVE TO BE PERSISTENT. Most Directtv service reps are moronic, script-reading, minimum wage robots. Ask, and continue to ask, to join the "NBC in NY only in LA" promotion, and eventually they will go ask a manager and come back and give it to you.
You can read more about it here:

14. Just wanted to add to everyone's positive comments about DirectTV and their East/West channels. I've had DirectTV for 8 years or so, and when we signed up the West/East feeds were part of all packages. Eventually some of the advertisers, local channel operators, and cable companies complained so they stopped offering it. Those of us who had those channels from the beginning continued to get them, and still do to this day. Once my friend got DirectTV it took him a week or so, but he was finally able to convince them to give him East/West feeds. Although it'll be a hassle it's well worth the trouble. Nothing like watching the prime time shows at 5/6, and the Late Night shows at 8:30.

15. I say you just get the SlingBox. It's likely that you'll be traveling elsewhere and still want to watch East Coast news-- unless the reason you want the feed is for something else. With the SlingBox you won't be stuck in, say, Bellevue without your East Coast news.
16. What I've done is add a box to my friend's account in NYC. Just go to Best Buy, buy the box. Have your friend call and activate the box. Connect to your TV in your place. Pay your friend the $6 a month. Been doing it for a year now.

17. Does any one have any possitive things to say about direct tv?

1. I replied to you on Twitter, but then realized that you likely would not see it since I am only following you.
Here's what you do: Get DirecTV and change the Service Address to somewhere in the New York City DMA, (you can keep your billing address in Los Angeles).
The other option is to find a service address that is in the middle of nowhere and would qualify for distant broadcasts. The problem is there aren't many of those places on the East Coast and if you pick somewhere like Elko, Nevada they will give you LA (NYC and LA being the two markets for places without local broadcasts).
